Cup

To hold supportively.

There’s not a single comfortable moment in the recent interview between J. Cole and Lil Pump. The unrest between them is not generational, but the growing pains of a genre starting to break free of traditional hardened masculinity. Although it doesn’t come naturally, Cole unearths a common thread with his guest—a desire to be a strong male role model for his children. This bridge connecting the I-don’t-care-about-anything rap with the mature, domestic lyricism we hear in For Your Eyez Only allows for a positive vulnerability to start to bleed in to the mainstream.

Cup

Something to be partaken of, or endured.

It took only one edition of the world’s greatest tournament to go from an invite only event (think an upturned cup, keeping things out) to a contest complete with a robust qualification stage (an upright cup, accepting until full to the brim). Although only eight countries have hoisted the trophy, this year promises one of the most open fields in recent memory. My hope? Brazil partakes, France endures.
